Kaip sakydavo kapitonas Vrungelis (lt. Pagyrungėlis arba Melagėlis): "Как вы яхту назовёте, так она и поплывёт!"

NASA named its space shuttles after famous exploration sailing ships.

On a more directly patriotic note, "Columbia" is considered to be the feminine personification of the United States. The name is derived from that of another famous explorer, Christopher Columbus.
Space shuttle "Columbia" is named after a small sailing vessel that operated out of Boston in 1792 and explored the mouth of the Columbia River. "Columbia" is named after the Boston, Massachusetts based sloop captained by American Robert Gray. On May 11, 1792, Gray and his crew maneuvered the Columbia past the dangerous sandbar at the mouth of a river extending more than 1,000 miles through what is today south-eastern British Columbia, Canada, and the Washington-Oregon border. The river was later named after the ship. Gray also led Columbia and its crew on the first American circumnavigation of the globe, carrying a cargo of otter skins to Canton, China, and then returning to Boston.
Also named "Columbia" was the first U.S. Navy ship to circle the globe bore that title.
Aboard the shuttle "Columbia" in the disaster on Feb. 1, 2003 was Israel's first astronaut, payload specialist Ilan Ramon, 47. Ramon had been a national hero in Israel for taking part in the 1981 bombing of a nuclear reactor in Iraq..

Space shutle "Challenger" (lt. iššūkis) was named after a Navy ship that sailed the Atlantic and Pacific oceans during the 1870's.
After shuttle "Challenger" disaster NASA needed a name for the new shuttle after the name "Challenger" was retired in honor of the dead astronauts. The agency wanted to continue the tradition of naming orbiters for the ships of famous explorers. Directed by Congress to do so, NASA let American students choose the name. NASA decided the final winner and announced the name in 1989 - "Endeavour".
Seven asteroids in Outer Space were named for the "Challenger" astronauts who were lost in a 1986 launch.

Space shuttle "Discovery" (lt. atradimas) is named for two famous sailing ships. One sailed by Henry Hudson in 1610-11 to explore Hudson Bay in Canada as well as search for a northwest passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the other by James Cook on a voyage during which he discovered the Hawaiian Islands. Cook also used "Discovery" to explore the coasts of southern Alaska and northwestern Canada. Another ship also named "Discovery", based on whaling ship design, was used by the British Royal Geographical Society for an expedition to the North Pole in 1875.

Space shuttle "Endeavour" (lt. pastangos) is named after the first ship commanded by James Cook, the 18th century British explorer, navigator and astronomer. On "Endeavour"'s maiden voyage in August 1768, Cook sailed to the South Pacific and around Tahiti to observe and record the infrequent event of the planet Venus passing between the Earth and the sun. Determining the transit of Venus enabled early astronomers to find the distance of the sun from the Earth, which then could be used as a unit of measurement in calculating the parameters of the universe. In 1769 during another leg of the journey, Cook was the first person to fully chart New Zealand (which was previously visited in 1642 by the Dutchman Abel Tasman from the Dutch province of Zeeland). Cook also surveyed the eastern coast of Australia , navigated the Great Barrier Reef and traveled to Hawaii. Endeavour and her crew reportedly made the first long-distance voyage on which no crewman died from scurvy, the dietary disease caused by lack of ascorbic acids. Cook is credited with being the first captain to use diet as a cure for scurvy, when he made his crew eat cress, sauerkraut and an orange extract. Cook's voyage on the Endeavour also established the usefulness of sending scientists on voyages of exploration. While sailing with Cook, naturalist Joseph Banks and Carl Solander collected many new families and species of plants, and encountered numerous new species of animals.

Space shuttle "Atlantis" was named after the primary research vessel to be used for oceanographic research. Such research was considered to be one of the last bastions of the sailing vessel as steam-and-diesel-powered vessels dominated the waterways. The research personnel worked in two onboard laboratories, examining water samples and marine life brought to the surface by two large winches from thousands of feet below the surface. The water samples taken at different depths varied in temperature, providing clues to the flow of ocean currents. The crew also used the first electronic sounding devices to map the ocean floor.
